Chapter 608 Catching in the Act
Chapter 608 Catching in the Act
That night, Naruto and Sasuke spent the night in an empty guest room in the Uchiha clan compound.
Perhaps because they hadn't experienced any intense battle the day before, and didn't have much pent-up fatigue, they naturally opened their eyes early the next morning, just as dawn was breaking, after falling into a light sleep.
After a quick wash, they left the Uchiha clan's territory and headed into the village.
The leaves were shrouded in a thin layer of mist in the early morning. There were not many people on the streets, and occasionally a few early-rising villagers carrying vegetable baskets passed by.
Satsuki walked beside Naruto at a moderate pace. Her purpose was clear: to encounter Naruto of this world in a way that was reasonable and not too deliberate. She was referring to Mai Uzumaki, the blonde girl with twin tails she had briefly met yesterday at the dessert shop.
Judging from yesterday's interaction, the relationship between Mai and Sasuke is clearly unusual. Sasuke, that awkward guy, invited her to the movies but stubbornly refused to admit it, while Mai, although she remained indifferent and didn't say much, didn't refuse.
What stage have these two reached? Are they still in the ambiguous stage of "more than friends but less than lovers," testing each other, or have they already tacitly understood each other and are just one step away from confessing their feelings? Satsuki was really curious.
However, before Satsuki could even begin her plan, Naruto's steps came to a halt.
In the morning light, a figure stood intently in a small open space beside the street.
He was a young man wearing a beret and a well-tailored casual outfit. His skin was much fairer than the average person's, and his features were handsome and refined. He was the kind of handsome guy who could make girls turn their heads to look at him when he walked down the street.
He held the palette in his left hand and the paintbrush in his right, facing the canvas set up in front of him, applying paint stroke by stroke.
Sai.
Naruto called out the guy's name accurately in his mind, but what really made Naruto unable to look away was not Sai himself, but what was presented on the drawing board in front of him.
How to put it? The colors are too bright: bright red, bright green, bright yellow, and bright blue. Several colors without any transition are crudely juxtaposed on the same canvas. The lines are too simplified: the figures only have round heads and four straight lines to represent limbs; the sun is a crooked red circle in the upper left corner of the paper; and the house is a square topped with a triangle.
This is completely at the level of a kindergarten child. To be honest, some kindergarten children can probably draw better than this.
Following his gaze, Zuo Yue also saw the easel. Her expression became somewhat subtle. She understood why Naruto would be drawn to a complete stranger. Indeed, it was quite remarkable that an adult could produce such a painting.
However, the face behind the canvas presented a completely different picture.
Sai wore a completely natural smile, devoid of any gloom. His eyes were focused and serious, and every stroke was made with solemnity, as if he were completing a masterpiece that would be remembered for generations.
Whether his drawing was bad or not is one thing, but he was genuinely happy.
Without approaching to speak, the two walked around the small clearing and re-entered the streets of Konoha. The sunlight gradually brightened, the fog had completely dissipated, and there were many more pedestrians on the street than before.
Then, before they had walked two blocks, they ran into another pair of very familiar figures.
The first thing that reached my ears was a powerful roar that could shake all the pigeons on the street into flight.
"Burn, youth! Today's morning training was an incredibly passionate, exhilarating, and tear-jerking super training session!"
A silver-haired man ran, one eye covered by a headband, his face masked. "First—run one hundred laps around Konoha! Then! Run one hundred laps upside down! And then, a blood-pumping competition!"
"Hey! What's wrong, Kai! Keep up with me! If I can outrun you, I demand a reasonable explanation! My best friend and nemesis can't possibly only have these tricks up their sleeve!"
The silver-haired ninja, Kakashi Hatake, turned around and shouted at the slow-moving figure behind him, whose volume was no less than before.
The situation was completely the opposite for the person behind him.
A man in a green bodysuit, sporting a signature bowl cut, thick eyebrows, and a watermelon-shaped hairstyle, was standing a few steps away, lazily yawning.
"Kakashi... I'm telling you, let's skip it today. Didn't we just run yesterday? Can we try something gentler today? Besides, I really don't have much energy today. How about we just run a lap around the village?"
It feels like our souls have been swapped...
However, in this world, such contrasts are the norm and nothing to be surprised about.
Naruto and Satsuki took steps simultaneously, bypassing the two figures in the middle of the street who were engaged in a one-sided tug-of-war over whether to run or not today.
Thinking about the conversation they overheard yesterday, the two headed towards the movie theater. Sure enough, by the stone steps at the theater entrance, they saw the figure already waiting there: Uchiha Sasuke.
He seemed a little nervous. One hand was in his pocket, and the other hand held the movie ticket between his fingers. His fingertips unconsciously and gently twisted the corner of the ticket stub, creating a few fine creases in the cardboard.
His gaze swept back and forth across both sides of the street, as if he were waiting for Mai Uzumaki.
"Hey Satsuki," Naruto said, shrinking further behind the wall and lowering his voice, "isn't it a bit inappropriate for us to be like stalkers, hiding in a corner and spying on someone's private activities?"
"What does it matter?" Satsuki didn't even turn her head, her gaze fixed steadily on the figure looking around at the movie theater entrance. Her answer was matter-of-fact. "In the end, that person is just me from another world, right? What's wrong with observing yourself? It's not like you're spying on a complete stranger. Is Naruto shy?"
"A female version of myself... to be honest, a little bit."
"Don't be such a spoilsport." Satsuki reached out and gently patted his arm. "I'm actually very curious about what Naruto, or Mai, in this world went through. Have you noticed? Mai's personality is somewhat different from Naruto's."
"What's wrong with it?"
"How should I put it... she seems a bit more frigid than Naruto. So I'm particularly curious about what exactly happened to her in this world... Ah! Here it comes!"
Satsuki's voice suddenly dropped halfway through her sentence, but her tone rose in a distinct arc of excitement. She grabbed Naruto's sleeve and pulled him half a step closer to her.
At the other end of the street, a blonde figure with twin ponytails walked out into the morning light.
Mai Uzumaki wore a simple orange casual outfit, her steps unhurried, her two ponytails swaying gently at her shoulders. Despite her age, she still possessed a face that could be described as that of a beautiful young girl.
His blue eyes appeared exceptionally clear and bright in the sunlight, but they lacked warmth, and he exuded a thin, barely perceptible sense of detachment.
She walked up to Sasuke and stopped. The moment Sasuke saw her appear, his shoulders lifted slightly, but he quickly pulled them back down.
His lips moved, and he said something. Mai replied, and after a few words, Mai nodded. Sasuke turned around, and the two walked side by side toward the entrance of the movie theater.
"Quick, follow them!" Satsuki grabbed Naruto's sleeve and tried to take a step forward, causing Naruto to stumble half a step.
Sudden.
"Smack."
A hand landed on Naruto's right shoulder, and at the same instant, another hand landed on Satsuki's left shoulder. The two of them froze on the spot, then instinctively turned their heads together.
Standing behind them was the same person they had seen yesterday.
Uchiha Mikoto, dressed in an elegant home kimono, asked with a cold face.
"Are you two... following my son?"
